Looking Forward. With over 40 years’ experience as a Western Australian builder Jim has seen great changes throughout his home state. The ordinary brick home that used to sit upon a quarter acre block has now become a rarity as increased development has reduced the standard plot size. The challenge of building a home that meets the needs of a family whilst sitting comfortably upon smaller land is one that excites Jim and his team at MyGen Homes, part of the Highbury group. Together they have built The Petra, their first hybridized home that is inspired by the natural surrounds of the Baldivis landscape. The result is a thoughtfully designed home that successfully engages with its environment and capitalizes upon available space.

Clever Design. Understanding the challenges faced by modern homeowners Jim’s vision was to create a versatile yet comfortable home in spite of area constraints. He quickly accepted that the traditional homes he’d spent his apprentice years building were no longer practical due to their reliance on clunky materials, and as a result looked to a modern solution. Adopting a fresh and innovative approach, Jim embraced contemporary construction methods to make the absolute most of the available space. Not only did this unlock additional room compared with standard houses, but it also allowed a greater emphasis on style and design.
Maximum Efficiency. Mindful of the financial pressures of home building, Jim and his team sought to reduce both the time and money spent getting families into their dream homes. Their solution was to use off-site construction throughout the build, which increases precision and efficiency whilst speeding up the entire process. According to Jim the benefits of this approach extends to limiting the wastage of materials, which ultimately aids The Petra’s environmentally responsible status and protects the homeowner’s hip-pocket.
“The fast building times will get people into their home quicker, saving money and time.”Jim, Baldivis, WA
The ability to offer such an innovative yet responsible housing solution that allows family’s to move into their homes in a little as 16 weeks is no small feat, and as such provides the MyGen team with a great sense of accomplishment. Adding to this success is the overwhelmingly positive feedback that the Petra has received with Jim noting that, “other builders who are impressed with what we have achieved are now talking about their own framed designs in the future.”
